Nelson Mandela and Us

Today we honor a true freedom fighter,

Nelson Mandela

You may not see the relevance right away but if you take the time to read the literature you can see how his courage made a difference in-- not only South Africa-- but the world.

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in Mveso, Transkei, South Africa. Becoming actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement in his 20s, Mandela joined the African National Congress in 1942. For 20 years, he directed a campaign of peaceful, non-violent defiance against the South African government and its racist policies. In 1993, Mandela and South African President F.W. de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to dismantle the country's apartheid system. In 1994, Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa's first black president. In 2009, Mandela's birthday (July 18) was declared Mandela Day to promote global peace and celebrate the South African leader's legacy. Mandela died at his home in Johannesburg on December 5, 2013, at age 95.

Situation:

Nelson Mandela died yesterday after living a very full life. In February, Black History Month would be a great opportunity to pay homage to such a man. Give me some ideas for an interesting assembly that honors Mandela's legacy. Now it may seem far away, but if it is going to be good, we must start planning yesterday!

Consider the following:

Assemblies are 40- 50 mins long
All students and staff will be there
We can incorporate multi media, audience participation, and performances as long as the theme and information are present

Research process:

Without using Wikipedia, find information about South Africa, apartheid, government and politics in Africa, and of course, Nelson Mandela.

  3. That was Nelson Mandela, who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead his country out of decades of apartheid. "We've lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this Earth," Obama said. "He no longer belongs to us -- he belongs to the ages." In his lifetime, he was a man of complexities. He went from a militant freedom fighter, to a prisoner, to a unifying figure, to an elder statesman.

  4. Le'Vonte Gray-
South Africa - South Africa, on the continent's southern tip, is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and by the Indian Ocean on the south and east. He was also the first African president of South Africa. Apartheid was a former social system in South Africa which black people and other racial groups didn't have the same political, economic rights as whites. Nelson Mandela full name was Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela who was born July 18, 1918 and died December 5, 2013. He was in jail for 27 years and married 3 women in his time. He was also anti-apartheid revolutionary leader for his country and fought for peace. In the end his legacy will be remembered for all time of being a great leader and a great president.
